From .ai to .si
Oct 5, 2026
Yesterday, we in TheLawyerics received a mail that a new Top-Level Domain (TLD), .si, was available for registration and we should hurry up. It was all Greek for us because we were not aware what this “si” stands for. Some search revealed that it was ccTLD of Slovenia just as “ai” is ccTLD of British overseas territory, Anguilla. Funnily, no one associates “ai” with Anguilla, rather it has been promoted as “artificial intelligence”. So is the case with “si”. It is being promoted as “super intelligence”. It is appalling for us that there is anything at present called super intelligence. Further search revealed that the USA President issued an Executive Order on September 29, 2026, directing replacement of AI with SI in official documents. Let us now have a look at the Executive Order.
The Executive Order defines Super Intelligence and its acronym SI as “… the technologies and systems encompassed by the term ‘‘artificial intelligence’’ as defined in section 9401(3) of title 15, United States Code”.
The purpose of replacement of the terminology has been explained as, “… The extraordinary technologies being pioneered by American innovators far exceed what was envisioned when the term ‘‘Artificial Intelligence’’ first came into use. … The terminology used by the Federal Government should reflect the transformative capabilities of these technologies and the limitless opportunities they create for the American people.”
The purpose seems to be to send a message that USA has progressed so much in the field of AI that it is now heading towards SI.
Well, we in TheLawyerics are not impressed. We extensively use AI and for us, it is nothing more than “assistive intelligence”, and there is nothing like “super intelligence” for the time being. We do not know what lies in the womb of future, but boastful claim of super intelligence seems to be quite exaggerated. We would term even “SI” as subsidiary intelligence. If there has been an intelligence superior to human intelligence, reputed brands like ChatGPT would not have used disclaimer “ChatGPT can make mistakes. Check important info.” A powerful force like AI or SI would not nervously tell human beings with ordinary intelligence to be cautious about the risks of using AI. You may see similar disclaimer in SI products. It however needs to be seen whether there would, in future, be anything called SI. For the time being, SI seems to be a hype rather than a realistic claim for replacement of human intelligence by super intelligence.
We in TheLawyerics have often said in our posts that new forms of intelligence already created through digital technologies or to be created in future, need regulation at UN level. It is a risky technology, perhaps with dangers as high as in the case of nuclear energy. What is that international bodies are waiting for? Something untoward?
