Since the crash of AI 171 at Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, I have been following up the events with one particular aspect in mind – whether it is a system failure or a human error. Within one month, blame game has started. If theory of human error is accepted, pilots are to be blamed, and they have already registered their protest against such blame. If theory of system error is to be accepted, Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, is in trouble. Its million-dollar reputation is at stake. I have in mind two similar incidents of Boeing crashes on October 29, 2018 and March 10, 2019 of Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines. Boeing accepted system failure but US authorities did not take any serious action except to impose financial sanctions. My concern is that if it is a similar case with June 12, 2025 incident, then issues like product liability and AI regulation must be taken up urgently. AI is coming like a watershed but its risks are not being accurately assessed before AI related products are launched for public use. If you feel that food safety standards is a must, then AI safety standards too are a must. This particular aspect is causing concern to me.
